ACCC eyes Australian supermarket procurement power

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has warned supermarkets Coles and Woolworths of greater attention being paid to their procurement practices.

The ACCC’s new Chairman, Rod Sims said that while the consumer watchdog had  worked to improve competitors' access to land to build supermarkets, it was now closely watching the major supermarkets.

'Many smaller suppliers to the supermarkets feel they lack a real ability to negotiate supply arrangements. The ACCC can and will watch closely to ensure any such dealings do not involve unconscionable conduct by the supermarkets,” he said.
