Company challenges Aust. Govt on marine contract

A marine based business hopes the federal government will reconsider its decision to award a contract to an overseas consortium at the expense of a homegrown alliance.Birdon Pty Ltd broke its silence over Lyne MP Rob Oakeshott’s lobbying on the company’s behalf.

Birdon donated money to Mr Oakeshott’s election campaigns.An allegation reportedly has been referred to the Independent Commission Against Corruption.This week, the Lyne MP said he “did not resile” from challenging a contract that was awarded to an overseas consortium at the expense of an Australian alliance, which put in a cheaper tender.Birdon was one company in the alliance for the Defence contract. Birdon managing director Jamie Bruce, in a statement, said Mr Oakeshott should have the right to bring to the government’s attention that there may be inefficiency in the procurement process at the expense of the Australian taxpayer and “national strategic capability”.
