New best practice guide for freight industry

14 Jul 2009

Published by the Victorian Freight and Logistics Council, the Good Practice Sourcebook provides a key resource for customers and suppliers of freight and logistics services in the quest for a sustainable and responsible industry.

It aims to give transport businesses of all sizes new ideas about meeting the economic, environmental and operational challenges of the 21st century.

VFLC chairman John Begley believes the Good Practice Sourcebook will be a fertile resource for business improvement and a showcase for a pro-active industry meeting and exceeding myriad challenges.

Conceived by the Council’s Freight Intermodal Efficiency Group and funded by Sustainability Victoria and the Victorian Department of Transport, the Good Practice Sourcebook details everything from leading edge developments to incremental improvements that can inspire businesses to pursue worthwhile improvement while striking the necessary balance between cost and benefit.

“We know that large companies often have the resources and capability to address issues such as energy consumption and emission production that smaller enterprises lack. The Good Practice Sourcebook aims to provide opportunities for all businesses, regardless of size, to find starting points and easily adapted initiatives that make self-improvement accessible to all,” says Begley.

For example, the publication highlights how the simplest of changes, such as maintaining the correct air pressure in the tyres of a vehicle fleet, can deliver outstanding results.

The Good Practice Sourcebook also includes a comprehensive Resources Index that provides a list of government, industry and private bodies offering further information and support to help take the next step.

The Good Practice Sourcebook was officially presented to the Roads and Ports Minister, The Hon. Tim Pallas, earlier this month and is now available to everyone free-of-charge.

It can be downloaded from the VFLC’s website at and a limited number of hard copies are obtainable from the Council secretariat.
