Independent bakers fight over bread supply

Queensland bakeries are calling for a boycott of cheap supermarket bread in a last-ditch attempt to save many small suppliers struggling to stay afloat. It comes after Coles and Woolworths were criticised for flooding the market with private labels.

"Major manufacturers ship their product hundreds of kilometres around the country, and therefore they produce bread which could be sold up to three days later," National Baking Industry Association general manager Paul McDonald said.

The supply of bread and increased private labelling in Australia’s major supermarkets has been an increasingly tense issue in recent months.
