Canadian company wins contract to build Melbourne trams01 Oct 2010Source: Canadian Business Canadian firm Bombardier Inc has won a $293-million (U. S.) order from the Victoria State Department of Transport in Australia for 50 Flexity low-floor trams for Melbourne. The state also optioned a further 100 trams. The trams, 33 metres long and carrying up to 210 passengers, will be built at Bombardier's Dandenong plant near Melbourne, with propulsion systems and bogies coming from its Mannheim and Siegen plants in Germany.. "The Flexity Melbourne tram fleet will see the resumption of tram production in Australia after a 12-year break and provide opportunities for our local supply chain to participate," said Dan Osborne, managing director of Bombardier Transportation Australia. More than 1,500 Flexity vehicles from Bombardier are in service in other cities. The first of Melbourne's new trams are due to be delivered in 2012. Read more here |
