Carbon tax revenue to go to big manufacturers

Over the first three years of the carbon tax, $9.2 billion of the revenue raised will be used to provide free carbon permits to manufacturers that generate over 80 per cent of emissions.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said part of the revenue generated by pricing carbon would be used to support jobs and investment in clean energy and climate change programs.
 
"A carbon price will create economic incentives for the biggest polluters to reduce there emissions of greenhouse gases," she said in a statement.

For manufacturing industries like aluminium smelting, steel making, flat glass making, zinc smelting, and most pulp and paper manufacturers, they will receive 94.5 per cent of industry average carbon costs.
