The governor of China's Guangdong Province said that he would visit Taiwan next month at the head of a 1,000-member Guangdong procurement delegation that will make purchase deals worth US$5.2 billion. Huang told a group of Taiwanese reporters that the main purpose of his coming trip will be promoting bilateral cooperation between his southeastern Chinese province and Taiwan, in addition to buying electronics, electrical, chemical products and agricultural goods.

Members of his delegation will include representatives of some 70 leading businesses in Guangdong who will seek to forge cooperation agreements with their Taiwanese counterparts in the fields of tourism, culture and agriculture, he added.

The Guangdong delegation visit comes on the heels of provincial-level groups from China's Sichuan, Shannxi, Jiangsu, Zejiang, Jilin, Guangxi, Hubei and Shanghai. – all have visited Taiwan since the beginning of this year. Huang said that Guangdong, the base for many Taiwan-invested businesses, is set to proceed with an industrial upgrade as a result of a decrease in land parcels available for development and soaring labor costs.

"Taiwanese enterprises, which are mostly export-oriented, are urged to upgrade and to shift their attention to China's huge domestic market, for which the provincial government will offer them assistance, Huang added.
