Chinese Vice President defends investment, procurement policies

Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Tuesday rebutted criticism that the foreign investment environment has deteriorated in China and that foreign companies are discriminated against in government procurement. Xi said that China is entering talks to join the World Trade Organization's Government Procurement Agreement with a serious and responsible attitude.

"With regard to government purchases and construction projects, the Chinese government will adopt an open, transparent plan to let foreign companies and technological products enjoy equal treatment," he said in comments broadcast live on state television. Xi's comments follow a rising chorus of complaints by foreign businesses in the past several months that they are facing greater discrimination and barriers to entry in the Chinese market.
