Defence procurement to involve local industry and overseas acquisitions

Defence Minister Stephen Smith has announced that the acquisition of almost 1000 vehicles would create work for industry in NSW and Queensland, stating that defence procurement traditionally involved a combination of local industry and overseas acquisitions.

"An important national security factor is the capacity to have a local industrial capability," he said.

"From the defence perspective, we run a national security policy. It is part of our national security makeup that we do have to have local industry capability in a range of areas."
