Study reveals drastic changes needed in Victoria's airfreight22 Oct 2010Source Transport and Logistics News The latest supply chain study by the Victorian Freight and Logistics Council has found five key targets for improvement in the state’s airfreight sector. The chairman of Victorian Airfreight Working Group’s Airfreight Steering Committee, Lil Valente, said the sector needed to take a ‘head-on approach’ to tackling the issues and applying necessary remedies. “The Victorian airfreight gateway services 70% of Australia’s population with a geographic distribution of some 610,000 square kilometres. As from the release of Freight Futures if current growth continues, by 2020 the nation’s airfreight task will have risen by 42% and be worth about $20 billion. The movement of high-value, perishable and time-critical goods demands the most efficient operation we can provide,” Mr Valente said. The study has revealed five main areas of concern: inadequate awareness, education and training; a lack of airfreight capacity out of Victoria; under-developed IT systems, data capture and exchange; less-than-optimal terminal infrastructure; and mismatched operating hours unable to meet 24/7 trends.
