Exposed businesses to be further hampered by carbon tax: ACCI

The looming carbon tax will worsen already poor business conditions and further hamper struggling businesses facing low demand, according to the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI).

"It is alarming," ACCI economics and industry policy director Greg Evans said. "Many exposed businesses will find it increasingly difficult to cope with further cost imposts, including the proposed carbon tax and the prospect of rising interest rates."

Evans said the tax coincided with weakness in "retail spending, building approvals, credit growth, car sales and house prices".
"About every measure you look at across the Australian economy is showing signs of low levels of demand," he said.
