More procurement and supply chain professionals are making that jump and reporting that not only has it been a good thing for their procurement organization, but it's also been a very good thing for their procurement career.
More and more procurement professionals are praising the benefits of overseas assignments.
Gerry Smith never imagined five years ago that in 2009 he'd be living in Singapore, preaching the benefits of international assignments for procurement professionals.
Smith had reservations about picking up his family and his career and moving across the world when his former company asked him to help set up a new business unit in Singapore. "I was the last person you would have thought would make an overseas move and a lot of people didn't think it would work for me," says Smith, who is now the senior vice president of supply chain at PC maker Lenovo.
"Now I'm the person who doesn't want to move back."
