Jamaican government eases procurement guidelines for disaster agencies

The Jamaican Government will be relaxing its procurement guidelines in an effort to make it easier for disaster agencies to obtain the services of contractors in cases of emergencies.  The move comes as the country prepares for the likely effect of Tropical Storm Tomas which could regain hurricane strength as it moves closer to Jamaica later this week.

The minister with responsibility for information, Daryl Vaz says the government is now facing some challenges in relation to the procurement guidelines to get contractors to do some of the necessary work. But he says the prime minister Bruce Golding plans to invoke emergency powers on a limited basis.
