Navy procurement under fire after fresh audit

A key government audit of 20 major Australian navy projects worth more than $23 billion has found significant flaws in defence management of its acquisition programme.

The audit, conducted by the Australian National Audit Office, has called for more effective communication between the three main bodies responsible for defence procurement. 

“It is evident from the audit that greater emphasis needs to be applied by navy, CDG [Capability Development Group] and DMO [Defence Material Oganisation], in maintaining a shared understanding of the risks to the delivery of navy capability agreed to by government,” it said.

The audit also singled out a lack of skilled navy engineers as one factor behind ‘chronic delays’ in delivering new capability.
