Australia’s National Broadband Network has contracted Nokia-Siemens Networks to supply optical transmission gear for the rollout of the $43 billion project in a deal that could be worth up to $400 million over 10 years. The contract will see Nokia-Siemens Networks supply optical transmission equipment which will allow NBN Co to provide its promised 100 megabit per second broadband speeds to 93 per cent of the nation. The equipment will be used to provide connectivity between the NBN‘s fibre access nodes, aggregation sites and points of interconnect (POIs). Nokia-Siemens Networks will also supply management systems and design, logistics, installation, testing and maintenance services.

NBN Co corporate services head Kevin Brown said the company had signed an initial purchase order with Nokia-Siemens Networks for $10m. This will include the acquisition of test laboratory equipment and systems to support the rollout of early release sites on the mainland.
