ASPI analyst says new Australian Defence body will fix procurement problems

Australian Strategic Policy Institute analyst Andrew Davies has predicted the establishment of a body that would take up the role of the old Force Development and Analysis when the Defence announces major departmental reforms in the next few weeks.

"The reabsorption of the DMO back into the Defence structure has the potential to improve sustainability while exacerbating problems with procurement,' he said.

The Defence Materiel Organisation currently provides limited contestability through its evaluation of Defence department procurement proposals.

'As stated in ASPI's report on the control and administration of the Department of Defence, no plan or proposal should go to the Government without having been robustly contested ... within Defence,' Defence Minister Steven Smith said.
