New govt appointee sees procurement as UK saviour

Sir Philip Green, the maverick billionaire boss of UK retail empire Arcadia, has pointed to centralised procurement as the answer to the UK's public-sector woes. Sir Philip has been asked by Prime Minister David Cameron to lead an effort to investigate further ways of making government departments more efficient. And speaking on BBC radio, he was abundantly clear on the power that lies in procurement.

The government departments haven't got a centralised procurement function," he said. "That just goes to show the type of opportunity there is." He went on to explain how getting to grips with the government's huge third-party spend should be at the very top of its list of priorities.
