NSW schools would get procurement powers under new proposals

Schools in NSW could be given greater control of their procurement spend on capital works and maintenance under a new proposal being considered by the NSW Government.

The NSW Education Department is considered by some to have one of the most centralised procurement systems in the world, but under the new proposal schools will be given greater discretion on how to spend their money and Principals  will be able to select teachers.

The discussion paper under consideration questions the current system under which 60 per cent of teacher placements are made through a centralised staffing process; saying it is "driven by 'one size fits all' formulas" rather than allowing the needs of students to drive the mixture of staff.
