Northern Territory gas project calls for tenders

03 Nov 2010

The Japanese resources company, Inpex has called for tenders to build the central processing plant at Ichthys in the Northern Territory’s Browse Basin and a pipeline to Darwin. It said tenders for a LNG plant at Blaydin Point on Darwin Harbour would be called later.

The company's Australia president director Seiya Ito said the contract invitation for the engineering, procurement and construction work at Ichthys was a "significant step" towards delivering a "world-class" gas development.
The contract includes a floating production storage and offloading vessel; umbilical, risers and flowlines; gas export pipeline to Darwin; and an undersea production system. A final decision on extracting gas - and piping it more than 800km to a Darwin LNG plant - will be made at the end of next year.

Mr Ito said nobody should underestimate the opportunities the Ichthys project held for NT and Australian economies. He said many of the world's leading engineering and construction companies qualified to tender for the Ichthys projects. Bidding companies would have to create "full, fair and reasonable opportunity" for suppliers to share in contracts.
There will be opportunities for Australian fabrication yards, equipment suppliers and manufacturers to bid for work.
