A major revamp of a New Zealand government procurement website will cut the costs and time involved in bidding for and awarding contracts, the Economic Development Ministry says. The Government Electronic Tenders Service is an online tool for advertising and informing suppliers about government tenders, with more than 70,000 registered users. A 2008 review of the site found it lacked functionality and strategic direction and was largely ignored by central agencies.
Phil Weir, procurement development manager at the ministry, says it will go to market for a new system or a major system upgrade early next year and in the meantime will work to improve the usability of the site.
The next-generation GETS will have dramatically improved search capability and tools to help automate the procurement process, such as contract management and tender evaluation tools.
