Panasonic Corp. has said it plans to raise its overseas parts and materials procurement rate to 60% in the year through March 2013 from 43% in fiscal 2009. The electronics giant aims to boost local production in emerging countries, with a focus on products targeted at middle-class consumers. With that in mind, the local parts and materials procurement rate in China and other Asian countries is expected to climb to 50% from 33%.

Panasonic has set a goal of lifting its overseas sales ratio to 55% in fiscal 2012 from 48% in fiscal 2009.
Overall, total parts and materials procurement costs for the Panasonic group, which includes Sanyo Electric Co. and Panasonic Electric Works Co. are expected to rise to 4.9 trillion yen from 4.4 trillion yen. At the same time, the company aims to consolidate suppliers. The parent company alone currently deals with roughly 9,000 suppliers.
