Papua New Guinea Increases National Procurement Capability12 Mar 2009Papua New Guinea will be in a stronger position to face challenges and opportunities following the commencement of the “CIPS International Certificate” programme in Port Moresby on the 9th March.
The programme provides a combination of face to face workshops, co-ordination of “study groups” and a local study centre to support procurement officers in their work towards completing the CIPS examinations through 2009 and 2010. This exciting and unique programme is supported by AusAID, the Central Supply and Tenders Board (PNG),Ministry of Treasury and Finance (PNG) and the CIPSA professional development services team. The programme will increase the technical procurement skills and capability within PNG as the nation faces greater demand for procurement skills. There is substantial investment in infrastructure and public services in PNG as the country faces expected GDP growth of around 6% this year. The PNG Minister for Treasury & Finance, the Honorable Member Patrick Pruaitch, specifically cited the many “challenges faced in undertaking procurement in a developing country” and declared that “Procurement can now been recognized as a strategic tool which, if used to its full potential, can drive social and economic development within Papua New Guinea".
