More private labels to enter supermarkets

More generic-labelled goods will continue to hit the shelves of Australia’s larger supermarkets as suppliers continue to lose their grip on the supply chain, Woolworths chief executive, Grant O’Brien, said.

Speaking after the company’s Annual General Meeting recently, O’Brien was unapologetic about plans to introduce more generic-label goods to his stores. 

"We introduced a new brand called Macro… it's now about 350 products and we're going to add to that because it's been very successful,' he said.

His comments come after the head of the global food manufacturer H.J. Heinz, William Johnson, attacked Coles and Woolworths this week for undermining branded goods in Australia.
