Changes needed to federal procurement-based policies: report

Both sides of federal politics have struggled to come up with workable procurement-based policies, meaning the non-mining economy is no longer benefiting as it once did, according to a report from Paul Cleary in The Australian recently.  

“The problem in managing Australia's multi-speed economy is that we're focused on industries such as cars, instead of addressing more obvious opportunities such as extracting more of the value-added business from our resource economy,” Cleary said. 

“Both sides of politics have struggled to come up with workable policies,” he said.

It comes after the Federal Government recently announced a $34 million commitment to Ford’s Melbourne plant; with politicians continually being faced “with tough and costly decisions that have serious repercussions whichever way they jump”.
