Living research lab to keep logistics on track

In March this year, TECH incubator National ICT Australia and Europe's biggest applied research outfit, Germany's Fraunhofer Institute, signed an $11 million, five-year joint research agreement to tackle transport and logistics sector problems. 

The project has now received the support from the private sector, crucial to its success securing letters of intent to partner with the lab from three major transport companies: Hamburg Sud, DHL and Linfox.

The first projects would probably be in supply chain optimisation. "Distribution centre optimisation, vehicle maintenance schedules, safety scheduling for haulage companies are all potential areas for research," said  Nicta Chief Executive, David Skellern.
