How much further must logistics firms go to protect the environment?

Last month's conference in International Sustainable Logistics at the University of Huddersfield heard some passionate and positive presentations from leading logistics providers and customers. 

Economist professor Colin Bamford made the point that the world economy will change significantly in the next two decades with massively expanding Asian populations, and developed economies such as the UK having a low manufacturing output as well as not being self-sufficient in food production. This will mean longer supply chains for more products.

"There are serious consequences for world GDP [through climate change]," he says. "Twenty-three years on we have made some progress, but [the UN Climate Change conference in] Copenhagen did not deliver the progress we need. Logistics is a dirty function. You could say we are never doing enough although the industry is aware and is striving for efficiency."
