Staying up to date with your market using RSS

08 Feb 2011

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a useful tool for staying up to date on market intell and other news that is of interest to procurement professionals. The RSS tool does the searching and compiling for you, allowing you to be more active with your time and increasing efficiency at the desk.

The RSS tool searches chosen websites for you and prompts you to any changes. Much like Google Alerts does, the RSS feeds are a useful tool to organise and increase efficiency.

Using RSS has many benefits:
• RSS searches through the blogs and news sources you choose and lists the updated information, saving you  time and aggravation.
• RSS allows you to receive the messages and content that you choose without the worry or interference of  spam.
• You have complete control and can add or delete a subscription easily and at any time. Because you are not  signed up at the individual blog, your information is kept private.
•  The blog and news source updates are sent to a web-based account, such as Google Reader, or a desktop  software program rather than your email, freeing up space in your email account.

There are a couple of ways that you may subscribe to RSS feeds.

1. In Google Reader
• You can search out feeds by clicking on the “Browse” option in the left-hand menu, next to “Add  Subscription”.
• You can subscribe to any of Google’s Feed Bundles, or use the keyword search at the bottom to find feeds on  topics that interest you.

2. On the Web
• You can locate RSS feeds also by checking for a RSS or icon or a link option on your favorite Web sites.  These will usually be found at the bottom of the page.
• On some websites you may find a button that says “Add to Google” click on the button and follow the prompts  to add that feed to your Google Reader.
