Subs on course to stay in South Australia12 Oct 2010Source Adelaide Now South Australia’s lead industry body Defence SA is confident the Federal Government will honour its commitment to build the next generation of submarines in South Australia. "We're still strongly of the belief and understanding that whatever is decided on and purchased will be built in South Australia," Defence SA chief executive Andrew Fletcher said yesterday. Mr Fletcher was in Canberra this week to meet the head of Defence procurement and other federal officials, and said "the position, to the best of my knowledge, has not changed". His comments were in response to a blog published by the director of submarine training agency Acoustic Force, Rex Patrick, questioning whether the Federal Government should choose Adelaide for shipbuilding and suggesting a ready-made design from a European manufacturer made more sense than designing an Australian boat. The initial price of a boat was only one factor that needed to be considered, Mr Fletcher said. Defence SA expected there would be considerable lobbying over the very lucrative work involved - particularly with a new government in place - and would not be fazed by other players staking claims.
