Calls for greater SME inclusion in defence procurement

An industry academic has called for better defence industry strategy that guarantees work for businesses, particularly for SMEs.

In his PhD, Better Ways for Small to Medium Enterprises to do Business with the Department of Defence, Dr Gerry Paz highlights the hurdles faced by manufacturers to break into global supply chains and survive between contracts and that defence industry SMEs needed to be more robust than other commercial SMEs.

Dr Paz stated that high-level project management and quality assurance was needed to navigate the procurement process and deal with their "tough customer".
